In a Style Rut? What to do?

One of the top things I hear each new season and year is ... "I am in a Style rut and I feel blah. I don't know what to do?" or "I have a closet full of clothes and feel like I don't have anything to wear."

What do you do?

How do you move forward?

Do you need to move forward?

What are your first steps?

Why do I feel this way?

Where do I even begin?

Why do I keep buying more and more?

Do not fret. These are normal things to think and feel. I even go through this. Here are my top 3 questions I ask myself and clients to get through a Style Rut.

1. WHAT SEASON OF LIFE AM I IN RIGHT NOW?

This helps me to focus on what actually makes sense for me and it works splendidly. Here's a great example: I used to wear a lot of high heels and ripped jeans and basic tees with a cute jacket, cardigan, or blazer. My season of life allotted for that. My current season does not, which means I had to reevaluate my style options that worked best for me in a functional, comfortable, and stylish way. My new season of life requires me to be on my feet a lot, unpack boxes, work from home, walk the dogs a lot, pick up a 4th grader and be active with her, attend events for work that are casual, and help out with my grandparents and mom. Wearing heels isn't cohesive in this new season of life, while I LOVE and adore them ... it just doesn't work. I reevaluated what made sense for me. This doesn't mean I don't ever wear heels, this means that I am being stylishly smart in what works best for me.

RESPECT YOUR SEASON OF LIFE. BE OKAY WITH IT. EMBRACE IT.

2. WHAT FABRICS, PRINTS, OR LOOKS DO I REALLY LOVE?

Once you have figured out and accepted your season of life, now you can play around with what you really love and how that works best for you. While I love heels but don't wear them as much, I have now found that wearing block heel combat boots and fun printed low booties is awesome and still makes me feel like me. I also loved wearing printed blazers, where now I have a passion for printed sleeves on sweatshirts because it's what makes sense for me. I need to be very comfy and functional in this new season of life, but don't want to get so comfy that I look sloppy. I shop for "FANCY" sweatshirts and keep my focus on what style works best for me right now.

STAY FOCUSED.

3. WHEN DO I FEEL MY BEST?

It ranges to be honest. But, if I had to pick? I feel my best when my outfit is flattering in fit and I can go from day to night in it, have coffee, let dogs jump on me, drink a beer with friends, go dance with my boyfriend, eat yummy food, and walk around the city. Does an outfit and shoes like this exist? Yes! Yes it does ... and it's a personal choice of what that looks like for you. I just happen to know what works best for me in all of those scenarios and that's because I have answered questions 1 & 2 honestly. I have truly embraced and stayed focused on those answers and created an answer to getting out of my rut and have stuck with it. Here's a great example: I knew on a Saturday during the Christmas holiday we were going to Austin for the day and evening and then coming home. We had a variety of activities that were taking place ranging from going to a few shops at The Domain, walking around the city outside, eating a little something, grabbing a cocktail, visiting my sister, and then enjoying the city a little bit more. It was going to be chilly at night and I would be walking around a lot too but in an area that was a little more stylish. Well ... what the hell is a girl to do? As much as I would've like to have worn yoga pants, a sweatshirt, my adidas, and a baseball cap ... this was not the occasion for that sort of look. BUT I put my plan of action in order, stayed focused, and got creative. I ended up wearing a fancy sweatshirt, denim overalls, low velvet punk rock booties, a faux leather black vest over my overalls and top, and little socks that had pearls on them that peeked through my boots. I paired my outfit with a dainty pearl necklace and stud earrings, put on darker lipstick and added a top knot messy bun to my hair. I felt fabulous. Most importantly, I stayed true to me and was 100% comfortable and warm. I felt my best.

OWN IT. WORK IT. HAVE FUN.
